Defining Instant Messaging (IM)

We are increasingly overloaded with emails. Many people receive hundreds of emails a day, effectively cluttering their ability to read or respond quickly to important messages.

Skype and Yahoo Instant Messenger (IM) are free, fast and easy ways to get in touch with colleagues. Both other free text communication. Skype also offer free/low cost telephone and video. They also enable users to quickly see if colleagues are online and available to chat. These are fast ways to get better connected with those you work with on a frequent basis. Ultimately, they support the many quick exchanges essential to your work.

Networks using IM

  • Use these tools for the quick and necessary questions: can we talk later, did you send in the report, can you send Paul’s email, etc. They don’t replace email - rather they support the fast exchanges.
  • See if colleagues are online or even in the office through the presence indicator tools.
  • Host free conference calls or chats with colleagues – previously often prohibitively expensive.
